S. 167-175.The paper is concerned with the analysis of selected developmental tendencies of the essay as a genre in the era of digitalization in an intermedial context. The remediation process involved in the transformation of the literary essay into the video/audio-visual essay is observed. The process of remediation is examined through the analysis of three typologically different video essays from three different environments — one Slovak and one Czech video essay are described, as well as one video essay from the US. In particular, the focus is on the attributes that transfer from the textual medium to the audiovisual medium, while the digital characteristics related to the YouTube platform are not omitted. The aim of the paper is to partly present the transformations of the contemporary essay, its developmental tendencies and characteristics through the analysis and comparison of the mentioned essays.
