Between therapy, activism, and profession: Bertha Pappenheim's contribution to the formation of modern social work
(International Organization Of Scientific Research : Gurugram, 2025) Jusko, Peter
This study analyzes the life and work of Bertha Pappenheim (1859–1936) as a significant figure in shaping the early contours of social work. The aim is to evaluate how her work – rooted in personal experience, ethical principles, and a gender-sensitive approach – resonates with contemporary concepts of social work as a profession that provides help. Based on biographical, historical, and professional sources, we have identified key aspects of her approach, including working with marginalized women, building community networks, cultural sensitivity, an emphasis on client autonomy, and a determination to change social inequalities. Of particular importance is the analysis of Pappenheim as a precursor to contemporary approaches, including intersectionality, trauma-informed care, empowerment, and community development. The results demonstrate that her life's work has enduring significance for reflection on professional identity, ethics, and practice in contemporary social work. Pappenheim thus represents a historical but also living model of value-based, critically oriented, and inclusive social work.

Territorial self-government as an environment of social work using a helping relationship to solve the social problems of inhabitants of local communities
(Univerzita sv. Cyrila a Metoda v Trnave, 2025) Jusko, Peter; Duchoňová, Lenka
The territorial self-government environment creates opportunities for social work to intervene in citizens' individual, group, and community social problems, which benefits not only members of local communities but also the territorial self-government. The most effective means of social work intervention for the benefit of residents of territorial self-government is helping relationships. Therefore, we set the goal of our empirical research to identify factors that stimulate clients to solve their social problems within a helping relationship with a social worker in the conditions of a territorial self-government. In the theoretical part of the contribution, we deal with the application of social work in the conditions of territorial self-government in the Slovak Republic, as well as the helping alliance in social work.

The diaconal work of sisters Kristína and Mária Royová - an example of the link between Christian anthropology and social work
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute : Basel, 2024) Jusko, Peter; Masarik, Albín; Nvota, Ján
Considering the intermingling of problems in today’s multi-crisis environment, this text explores the possibilities of intertwining social work and pastoral care. In the search for effective approaches, we find dynamic patterns in the activities of the Royová (Roy) sisters. Their diaconal work is an important source for social work history illustrating how social work took the form of diaconal (charity) work with a rich pastoral reach at the time. Their activities represent a natural link between Christian anthropology and social work. This study mainly investigates the Christian (spiritual) basis of the social and charitable activities of the Royová sisters, the beginnings of the institutionalisation of social and charitable work in Slovakia and Serbia through the organisations founded by the Royová sisters, the Christian-social interpersonal contribution of the Roy sisters to the development of Slovak and European social work personified by their cooperation with several personalities of social and charitable work at the international, national, and local levels, and the contribution of the Roy sisters in the creation of women’s, volunteer, and international roots of social and charitable work in Slovakia and Europe. In their responses to the needs of their environment, we find significant stimuli for pastoral theology, which is supposed to respond to the needs of the multi-crisis environment of today.

Transforming social work for sustainability: Reframing social work through an eco-social lens
(Hill Publishing Group : New York, 2025) Jusko, Peter
The Eco-social transformation of social work represents a new approach responding to the deepening ecological crisis and growing social inequalities. While traditional social work has historically focused primarily on solving the problems of individuals and communities in a social context, the eco-social paradigm broadens this perspective to include an environmental dimension and the systemic interconnection between humans, society, and the natural environment. Based on a synthesis of international professional literature, this article analyses the theoretical foundations, value frameworks, and practical applications of eco-social work. It pays particular attention to the challenges faced by professionals in implementing these approaches in practice, as well as the possibilities for integrating them into education, policies, and professional standards. Eco-social work thus emerges as a potential tool for social transformation towards a more just and sustainable future.
