    Participatory platform for sustainable cultural tourism : the case of Central Slovakia

    Digital technologies, combined with a participatory approach, form the foundational prerequisites for the development of successful and innovative products in sustainable tourism. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the participatory creation of an interactive responsive platform and digital map titled “Mining Treasures of Central Slovakia.” This platform compellingly showcases the most significant mining sites in Central Slovakia, aiming to leverage their rich cultural and historical potential to establish a competitive edge. This, in turn, supports regional development and promotes sustainable cultural tourism. This chapter includes a case study highlighting best practices in participatory platform development. Central tfvo the discussion is the region’s potential, rooted in its rich mining history. This potential, when combined with modern technologies and a participatory approach, sets the stage for the platform’s success.

    Slovakia is a small country in the middle of Europe, a member of the European Union since 2004. It is one of the most fragmented countries in Europe, with almost 3,000 municipalities and a population of 5.5 million. The average Slovak local government—the municipality has an area of approximately 17 square kilometres. Only two cities, Bratislava and Košice, have more than 100,000 inhabitants (approximately 430,000 in Bratislava and 250,000 in Košice).
