Building the supervisory relationship from the perspective of supervisors and supervisees in social work

The development of technology and the digitalization of the work environment, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have led to a significant shift of supervision processes into the online environment (Connel, 2023). This shift brought numerous changes and challenges related to technological equipment, nonverbal communication, and the need to adapt to new ways of establishing contact and the supervisory relationship (Mo et al., 2021). The relationship between the supervisor and the supervisees is con sidered a key determinant of a successful supervisory process. Building a supervisory relationship in an online environment may be influenced by several aspects – from the digital competencies of participants, through their personal aspirations, to the technical background and sense of safety. The aim of this chapter is to explore the aspects of building a supervisory relationship in the context of online supervision (including “tele-supervision”) from the perspectives of both supervisors and supervisees. This also opens up space for proposing strategies and procedures that can help over come challenges related to technological, communication, psychological, and other barriers affecting the establishment of supervisory relationships in online environments.
