Abstrakt
The article offers a probe into the critical work of Alžbeta Göllnerová-Gwerková (1905–1944) and Zora Jesenská (1909–1972) in the 1930s. Its aim is to analyze the literary-historical and sociological contexts of their entry into the sphere of criticism, as well as selected texts in which they responded to tendencies in mainstream literary-critical thought while also opening themselves to broader engagements with social and cultural criticism, revealing their understanding of criticism as part of the ethos of the democratic state. Methodologically, the study draws on the concept of the phasing of female identity (Libuše Heczková) and the postcritical concept of working with texts (Rita Felski), tracing the gradual transformations that prepared a stable background for women critics’ critical work in the 1930s. In its analytical section, the article examines two thematic areas: the points of departure for the more active engagement of these actors in the women’s emancipation movement and their dialogue with the mainstream criticism of the period through reflection on shared questions, where the “pulsation” of literary development becomes visible, including with regard to the self-regulation of criticism.
