Enhancing transformational literacy in Slovakia: implementing service awd e-service learning in academia with no previous experience
(Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II. : Lublin, 2025) Javorčíková, Jana; Strnádová, Petra
This study investigates university instructors’ awareness and readiness to implement service learning (SL) and electronic service learning (e-SL) within higher education, with a focus on Slovak departments of languages at Matej Bel University (MBU). Using qualitative data from interviews with ten instructors, the study explores perceptions, institutional support, and barriers to SL and e-SL adoption. Results reveal general awareness of SL, but limited familiarity with e-SL. Most participants indicated a willingness to undergo SL/e-SL training. However, a gap exists between the university’s strategic commitment to SL and its practical support at the faculty level. This misalignment may hinder broader adoption of the methodology. The study concludes that successful implementation requires not only awareness and training but also structural and cultural shifts within academic institutions. SL and e-SL offer significant potential for advancing civic responsibility, inclusive education, and community engagement, yet their effectiveness depends on holistic institutional support and the redefinition of faculty roles.

Humanities and social sciences translation in Soviet Ukraine in the 1920s–1930s
(Ústav svetovej literatúry SAV : Bratislava, 2026) Kalnychenko, Oleksandr; Kolomiyets, Lada
This study explores the translation of humanities and social sciences texts in Ukraine during the 1920s–1930s, a time of cultural and political shifts. The Soviet Ukrainization policy (1923–1929) drove a surge in translations of scholarly works in pedagogy, psychology, philosophy, and Marxist theory from German, French, and English. Scholars like Oleksandr Finkel, Mykola Zerov, and Mykhailo Kalynovych developed advanced translation theory, with Finkel’s Teoriia i praktyka perekladu (Theory and practice of translation, 1929) emphasizing genre-specific strategies for non-literary prose. The early 1930s reversal of Ukrainization and Stalinist Russification suppressed Ukrainian linguistic autonomy, imposing Russian intermediary translations and branding translators as “nationalist saboteurs”. Despite the repression, these translations enriched Ukrainian intellectual life, even as political terror erased many works from history. Funded by the EU NextGenerationEU through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic under Project No. 09I03-03-V01-00148. Funded by the Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies (Sweden) as part of the project “De/colonizing Ukraine: Practices of Russification and Modes of Resistance 1922–1991” under Project No. 24-PR2-0020.

On comprehensively critical rationalism, relativism, and fake criticism (a reply to Armando Cíntora)
(Universidad del Valle : Santiago de Cali, 2026) Taliga, Miloš
In his paper, Armando Cíntora (2024) argues that the notion of criticizability, I proposed in my paper (Taliga, 2022) to show that critical rationalism can be comprehensive and non-paradoxical at the same time, faces the challenge of relativism. In this reply, I shall first summarize the notion of criticizability and Cíntora’s objection to it (Section II), then I shall argue that creationists or flat-earthers introduced by Cíntora (2024) do not do criticism, but fake criticism (Section III), and, finally, I shall explain why, and how, that blocks Cíntora’s charge of comprehensively critical rationalism from relativism (Section IV).

The first wave of retranslations in Soviet Ukraine (1930s-1950s): russification and ideological control
(Helvetica : Kropyvnyckyj, 2025) Kalnychenko, Oleksandr; Kalnychenko, Nataliia
This article examines the phenomenon of retranslation in Soviet Ukraine during the 1930s–1950s, framing it as a tool of ideological control, cultural rewriting, and Russification under Stalinism. Drawing on historical and comparative analysis, it identifies the first wave of retranslations and revised editions as a response to shifts in Bolshevik national policy, particularly the 1933–1935 campaign against “nationalist sabotage” in translation. The study contrasts the approaches of the 1920s, which emphasized stylistic fidelity and cultural autonomy (“homologous translation” or “translation-stylization” as defined by Volodymyr Derzhavin), with the imposed literalness and ideological conformity of the Stalin era, which favored orientation toward the Soviet reader, Russian language norms, and Soviet ideology (“analogous translation”). Case studies include retranslations of Nikolai Gogol's Taras Bulba (Andriy Nikovsky's 1930 version vs. Antin Khutoryan's 1935/1948 Russified edition) and Ethel Lilian Voynich's The Gadfly (Maria Lysychenko's 1928 Ukrainianized translation vs. Maria Ryabova's 1935 standardized version). Using bibliographic data, theoretical works, and textual comparisons, the article reveals how retranslation and revised editions contributed to the ideologization of translation norms, the erasure of names of repressed translators, and linguistic unification. The conclusion emphasizes that retranslation reflected the evolution of Ukrainian national identity, serving both as an instrument of domination and resistance, and highlights post-Stalin efforts in the mid-1950s and 1960s to revive authentic Ukrainian translation practices.

Ethnopoetic aspects of I. S. Shmelev’s prose in short stories "Christ’s All-Night Vigil" and "The Light of Reason"
(Petrozavodskij gosudarstvennyj universitet : Petrozavodsk, 2026) Leonov, Ivan Sergejevič; Cintula, Igor
Based on the short stories “Christ‘s All-Night Vigil” and “The Light of Reason,” this article examines the ethnopoetic aspects of the “parish prose” of Ivan Sergeevich Shmelev, a writer of the first wave of Russian emigration whose work is deeply connected to the Orthodox Christian worldview. It reflects the specifics of the spiritual life of the individual and society within the context of the historical changes in early 20thcentury Russia. The study focuses on identifying and analyzing the features of parish prose. Currently regarded as a phenomenon of the contemporary literary process, the genesis of this genre is nonetheless inextricably linked to the philosophical and artistic quests of precursor writers such as F. M. Dostoevsky, N. S. Leskov, B. K. Zaitsev, and I. S. Shmelev himself. Shmelev’s late work is marked by an evolution from critical to spiritual realism: the significance of liturgical and non-liturgical parish motifs increases, becoming sacred symbols of the loss and eventual return of Russia as a spiritual ideal for the writer. The article analyzes key motifs and artistic devices (categories of sacred time, symbolic imagery, themes of repentance and sanctity) that convey the depth of inner spiritual experience and the importance of Orthodox world perception amidst changing historical and cultural realities. It is concluded that an analysis of selected short stories by Shmelev through the prism of ethnopoetics and axiology helps to reveal not only the literary and stylistic specifics of the writer’s works but also new ways of perceiving Russian spirituality and Orthodox values in émigré literature. This approach creates a perspective for further research into the genre of parish prose and spiritual literature within Russian culture.

Different languages, different landscapes? Exploring linguistic differences in landscape conceptualizations
(De Gruyter Poland : Warsaw, 2026) Mácha, Přemysl; Ainiala, Terhi; Bijak, Urszula; Bughesiu, Alina; Crljenko, Ivana; Felecan, Oliviu; Geršič, Matjaž; Gondeková, Veronika; Koščová, Michaela; Laansalu, Tiina; Mačutek, Ján; Rapa, Sanda; Reszegi, Katalin; Skorupa, Pavel; Vainik, Ene; Vlahova-Angelova, Maya; Vrachionidou, Maria; Zymovets, Halyna
The goal of the research was to assess whether landscape conceptualization systematically differed across European languages in the context of the linguistic relativity debate. We examined the generalizability of previous findings and evaluated the limits of used methodologies, drawing on a large and diverse sample of 14 languages across 5 linguistic families in Eastern Europe (Slavic, Baltic, Uralic, Romance, Hellenic). Participants were asked to free-list terms associated with three linguistic domains: landscape, animals, and body parts. Mixed ANOVA, pairwise comparisons, frequency distribution, cognitive salience, and semantic network analyses were used to test for relationships and to visualize patterns and differences between languages. We confirmed that the landscape domain was less structured than the domains of animals and body parts. Furthermore, the landscape domain had weaker semantic connections across languages. However, we did not find any systematic differences in landscape conceptualizations across languages that could be clearly attributed to linguistic factors. Rather, we argue that the observed variability is more likely the result of multiple factors – geographical, cultural, and linguistic. Building on previous research, we propose more nuanced methods in future research that integrate qualitative, ethnographic insights with quantitative methods, while accounting for extra-linguistic factors.

Semiotická krajina banskobystrického krematória a jeho okolia: Nekropola
(Ostravská univerzita v Ostravě, 2025) Bachledová, Marianna
This paper examines the semiotic landscape of cemeteries, focusing on the Necropolis in Urnový háj, Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. Slovakia can be characterised as a Central European cultural space shaped by intertwined Catholic, secular, and post-socialist traditions, where commemorative practices mirror the coexistence of collective memory, religious symbolism, and modern consumer culture. This paper explores the intersection of memorial spaces and commercialisation, questioning the balance between public commemoration and private marketing. Using ethnographic linguistic landscape analysis (ELLA), the study highlights how language, symbols, and architecture form a semiotic network influenced by sociocultural and economic factors. Findings show that cemeteries function as collective cultural texts, reflecting societal values and historical narratives. The Necropolis, with its promotional elements, disrupts its solemnity, eliciting mixed public reactions. The study also underscores how commercialisation and urbanisation reshape cemetery perception. The fading symbolic meaning of gravestones further complicates public engagement with memorial spaces.

Pedagogical grammar as the framework of TEFL research. Part 19. Correlation between the form of rules of linguistic and pedagogical grammars
(Charkivskyj nacionaľnyj universytet imeni V. N. Karazina, 2025) Chernovatyi, Leonid
The nineteenth paper in the series continues to discuss the correlation between linguistic (LG) and pedagogical (PG) grammars in the development of communicative grammar skills. This time, the author addresses the issue of the form of LG and PG rules, aiming to answer a series of questions. What is the general attitude of researchers towards using LG grammar information in the classroom? Are LG rules effective for grammar teaching in their current linguistic form? How can their efficiency be increased by changing their form, bearing in mind the psychological nature of the process of developing grammar skills? An analysis of contemporary literature on this topic revealed a significant shift in attitude towards explicit focus on linguistic form in teaching, moving away from the zero tolerance of LG information in communicative language classrooms of the 1970s and 1980s. While maintaining strict adherence to the communicative nature of teaching and the prevalence of meaning-focused tasks in the classroom, researchers also acknowledge the importance of explicit attention to form for language acquisition. Stressing the teacherʼs role as a facilitator, the authors praise the use of pre-task modelling techniques, which positively impact learnersʼ attention to linguistic forms and facilitate second language skill development. Conversely, the author cautions against the uncritical revival of grammar-translation techniques, asserting that PGʼs primary objective is to foster studentsʼ communication abilities rather than their comprehension of LG structure. Based on this, he suggests that PG can disregard the principles of LG structure and establish its own rules, which may differ from those of LG. The author convincingly demonstrates the validity of this principle using examples from the pre-zero-tolerance era and shows the potential of types of pedagogical information such as models and algorithms as specific forms of PG rules. The author suggests a number of requirements for PG rules, promising to extend this list in his next contribution to the series.

Analyse des néologismes affixaux par le biais de Sketch Engine
(Institut za jezik i književnost, Filološki fakultet : Nikšić, 2025) Chovancová, Katarína; Ráčková, Lucia

(West University of Timisoara, 2025) Biloveský, Vladimír; Mešková, Ľudmila
This paper presents a proposal for the preparation of translators of non-literary texts that takes into account changes driven by globalization, labour markets, and developments in IT and AI. These changes, in turn, alter the translator’s role, competences, and skills. The model develops interpersonal and transversal competences, the use of various CAT tools and localization techniques for translating non-literary texts. It also supports the development of intercultural competence, which is essential for translators in today’s globalized world. Finally, it points to a balanced relationship between the translator as a human being and AI. The model is a balance between curriculum content and organization on the one hand, and other players in the translation market on the other.

Language under strain: somatic expressions with 'tooth/teeth' in Slovak news media (a corpus-based study of expressive phrasemes in political and war contexts)
(Sveučilište u Rijeci : Rijeka, 2025) Huťková, Anita; Pecníková, Jana
This study investigates expressive phrasemes containing the word tooth/teeth as they appear in the Slovak daily journal SME. The primary aim is to highlight their linguistic forms and expressive functions within journalistic discourse, focusing on established phraseological patterns, stylistic devices (e.g., proverbs, sayings), as well as metaphorical and metonymic imagery. We examine the semantic structure of tooth in somatic phrasemes through conceptual profiling, drawing on the ethnolinguistic frameworks of Wierzbicka (1985, 1996), Bartmiński (2010), and Vaňková & Vitkovskaya (2014). Our objective is to uncover the cognitive structure and to assess its expressive potential within the specific thematic context of the war in Ukraine. The study employs methods of corpus linguistics and pragmatic stylistics, using textual data from a dedicated corpus of SME articles published between January 2022 and May 2023. This corpus was compiled by the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava at the request of the authors.

Parodický žánrový mix ako hodnotový prototyp internetovej občianskej publicistiky (Samizdat Hlas kotolne 1989-1992 v sociolingvistickom svetle)
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2025) Patráš, Vladimír
The paper focuses on an interdisciplinary presentation of the social conditions and socio-communicative circumstances of the emergence and existence of the Slovak periodical Hlas kotolne (The Voice of the Boiler Room), focusing on its genre profile. The computer-processed, low-cost, unregistered by the regime, community-distributed copies were edited in the breakthrough period as a unique, playful initiative of members of the young, non-journalist intelligentsia from December 1989 to April 1992. This paper aims to identify the possibilities, intentions, and expressions with journalistic features and predetermination of that time, consider the linguocultural conditions, contour the value- or value-forming ambitions of contemporary communication, and highlight their (dis)use in contemporary internet journalism. Analytical perspectives on the motivic area form the paper's main line, the periodical's compositional profile and genre composition, along with model characteristics and variation potential of texts published during the short life of the edition. The focus of the reflections is formed by references to the peculiar parodic-persiflage way of medializing the theme and object of attention, contemporary motifs, or protagonists of life in the post-socialist society at the end of the 20th century. The cyberenvironment provides much more developed and varied conditions for building effective, necessary value prototypes of citizen journalism than Hlas kotolne did as its proto-digital predecessor. Despite the preceding insights, skillful, professional parodies, hybrid genre practices, and readable, inspiring posts are only sporadically employed in today's online media communications sphere.

Druhý život Slovenského národného povstania v Banskej Bystrici v povojnovom období a komunistickej ére
(Historický ústav AV ČR : Praha, 2025) Syrný, Marek; Uhrin, Marian
From the end of August to the end of October 1944, a widespread anti-Nazi uprising occurred in central Slovakia, with its focal point in Banská Bystrica. This uprising, which would subsequently be recognised as the Slovak National Uprising, played a significant role in the post-war era. This initiative represented an endeavour by the Slovak resistance movement of that period, comprising centrist democrats and predominantly the communist left, to align with the Allies and advocate for the re-establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, with Slovakia being granted equal standing within it. Despite its military defeat, the movement succeeded in establishing a distinct political identity for Slovakia, one that positioned the nation as a sovereign entity within a broader Czech state. In the aftermath of the war, Slovak politics and society allocated significant resources and energy to the commemoration of not only the victims of the uprising, but also the political legacy of this historic event. The commemoration in Banská Bystrica comprised the annual nationwide celebrations of the Uprising, and later the dominant Slovak National Uprising Memorial, along with the activities of the Slovak National Uprising Museum, which was located there. In addition to analysing the manifestations of the commemoration of the Uprising in the city, the contribution will focus in particular on the dynamics of the development and influences of political and social changes that characterised this public „remembrance“ in the post-war period, with a particular emphasis on the influence of the communist regime. The communist leadership of the state also adopted a totalizing interpretation of the resistance and the Uprising, and derived its claim to a monopoly on power from these events. This phenomenon was reflected in the manner, timing, and participants involved in the public commemoration and celebration of the Uprising in the central location of these activities, namely Banská Bystrica.

Podoby niektorých slovenských priezvisk ako výsledok multietnických vplyvov v strednej Európe
(Instytut Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk : Varšava, 2025) Krško, Jaromír
Today’s two-name anthroponymic system is the result of a gradual evolution from the one-name system used in the early Middle Ages, through a transitional period when a person was identified more precisely by means of a byname or nickname, to the lasting formation of a two-name system, with anthroponyms consisting of the first name and a surname. From the thirteenth century onwards, the one-name system was gradually replaced by a two-name system – the father’s name, degree of kinship, social rank, occupation, features of appearance etc. were added to the family name. Around the fifteenth century, we can speak of the formation of basic types of surnames. This article fouses on the analysis of selected Slovak surnames that indicate not only native motivational background, but also the influences of neighbouring ethnicities and languages. The forms of some Slovak surnames were influenced by languages such as German, Polish, Latin, Hungarian and Romanian, which points to ethnic migration in the area of central Europe.

František Víťazoslav Sasinek ako aktér knižného trhu s historickou literatúrou v 19. storočí
(Slovenská národná knižnica : Martin, 2025) Kudzbelová, Zuzana
The paper focuses on the historical book production of František Víťazoslav Sasinek within the context of the book market in the second half of the 19th century. It examines the genesis of his historical works, the mechanisms of their publication, distribution, and reader reception. Particular attention is paid to Sasinek’s collaboration with publishing institutions and booksellers, as well as the strategies he employed to promote his writings. The study also explores the media reception of his works within both the Slovak and broader Central European context.

Students’ perceptions and experience regarding the use of artificial intelligence in interpreter training
(Univerzita Konštantína Filozofa v Nitre, 2025) Melicherčíková, Miroslava; Snováková, Adriána
The paper presents findings from a study investigating students’ attitudes toward and experience with AI tools in interpreter training. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 32 Master’s degree students. The results indicate widespread use of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Consensus, for glossary creation, topic familiarization, and efficient preparation. Students generally perceived AI positively, recognizing its potential to streamline their work, though concerns were raised about possible misuse and a decline in critical thinking. Despite varying experience levels, AI use remained consistent, primarily influenced by the availability of relevant training materials. Students at different stages of training used AI in similar ways, differing mainly in the amount of time devoted to preparation. Students acknowledged AI’s increasing integration into interpreting practice, viewing it as a helpful aid rather than a replacement for human interpreters. The study advocates for the integration of AI into interpreter training, emphasizing contextual preparation and the development of technological competence. It also highlights the role of teachers in guiding students toward the effective use of artificial intelligence, fostering an innovative learning environment. Future research with larger and more diverse samples is recommended to further explore AI’s impact on interpreter training.
