dc.description.abstractIn this paper, we have attempted to highlight the problems arising from a lack of knowledge of terminology in the context of the health crisis caused by the new SARS-CoV-2 pathogen, which may occur when translating from French into Slovak and vice versa. Our research sample consisted of terms belonging to the category of so-called faux amis, for which we compiled short terminological records. These were the Slovak terms rúško, respirátor, pľúcny ventilátor and reprofilácia. We drew terminological information from dictionaries and terminological databases, but also from our corpus compiled from media texts. We documented the use of the analyzed terms in the context of the health crisis with examples drawn from our corpus, which we searched using the Sketch Engine corpus manager. We found that current Slovak and French dictionaries and terminology databases do not reflect the current state of terminology in the field of health threats. This can cause problems in translation, which can be very dangerous from a health protection perspective. The issue under investigation would require further research on a broader sample of terms, as the protection of public health during a pandemic also depends to a large extent on the level of terminology processing and its adequate use.
