dc.description.abstractMoral education and civil society form an integral part of any attempt to create a just and stable social order. Already in the thought of John Locke, one of the key thinkers of the early modern period, we find a compelling basis for the claim that a free and just society cannot exist without morally educated individuals. Locke's theory is based on the premise that virtues are not innate qualities, but rather their development is the result of education, personal experience, and reason. In the context of the Slovak curriculum reforms, there is room for reflection on how the education system could contribute to the development of responsible and critically thinking citizens. Our aim is to explore the philosophical basis of Locke's ideas on moral education and their applicability in contemporary education. Against the backdrop of current social and educational challenges, we focus on an analysis of Locke's concept of the social contract, his ideas about moral education, and their relevance to a modern democratic society. In the context of the current curricular reform in Slovakia, which emphasizes the comprehensive development of pupils, Locke's emphasis on the protection of natural rights and the importance of education is particularly relevant. The reform reflects the need to integrate ethical education, critical thinking and civic responsibility into the educational process, which are the very principles that Locke also considered essential for the healthy functioning of a civil society.
