Abstrakt
Deciding whether to contract out public services or to manage them internally should involve the analysis of the transaction costs, which can make up a significant part of the overall costs for contracting out. Despite their importance, previous research suggests that these costs are often overlooked during the decision-making process, both in Slovak municipalities and in other countries as well. This study identifies the current situation in Slovakia regarding transaction costs, which we split into ex-ante transaction costs and transaction costs occuring during the contract period, specifically those associated with the municipal waste management service. Using data from an online survey of 254 municipalities, the analysis shows a general lack of information regarding these costs from the municipalities´ point of view.
