Abstrakt
The presented paper examines selected essays by Alexander Matuška from the 1930s in the context of the theory of social systems. Drawing on the theses of the so-called integrative causal model of science, Matuška’s early work is interpreted within the framework of J. Carroll’s agonistic structure. In it, the emphasis is on conceptualizing protagonists and antagonists, or heroes and anti-heroes, as main and secondary characters in a particular narrative. The aim of this paper is to interpret Matušek’s literary agency in the social system of literature as a purposively anatagonistic conceptualization of persons with a concrete correlate in reality. His essays are also interpreted in the context of influences from the Czech cultural context, namely as echoes of the ideas and views of F. X. Šalda and A. Pražák.
