Abstrakt

From the end of August to the end of October 1944, a widespread anti-Nazi uprising occurred in central Slovakia, with its focal point in Banská Bystrica. This uprising, which would subsequently be recognised as the Slovak National Uprising, played a significant role in the post-war era. This initiative represented an endeavour by the Slovak resistance movement of that period, comprising centrist democrats and predominantly the communist left, to align with the Allies and advocate for the re-establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic, with Slovakia being granted equal standing within it. Despite its military defeat, the movement succeeded in establishing a distinct political identity for Slovakia, one that positioned the nation as a sovereign entity within a broader Czech state. In the aftermath of the war, Slovak politics and society allocated significant resources and energy to the commemoration of not only the victims of the uprising, but also the political legacy of this historic event. The commemoration in Banská Bystrica comprised the annual nationwide celebrations of the Uprising, and later the dominant Slovak National Uprising Memorial, along with the activities of the Slovak National Uprising Museum, which was located there. In addition to analysing the manifestations of the commemoration of the Uprising in the city, the contribution will focus in particular on the dynamics of the development and influences of political and social changes that characterised this public „remembrance“ in the post-war period, with a particular emphasis on the influence of the communist regime. The communist leadership of the state also adopted a totalizing interpretation of the resistance and the Uprising, and derived its claim to a monopoly on power from these events. This phenomenon was reflected in the manner, timing, and participants involved in the public commemoration and celebration of the Uprising in the central location of these activities, namely Banská Bystrica.
