Abstrakt
The paper examines the tourist guide Turčiansky Svätý Martin and Its Surroundings (1934) as a distinctive type of historical-geographical source. Published by the Local Branch of Matica Slovenská in Turčiansky Svätý Martin, the guide is analysed not merely as a practical handbook for visitors but also as a normative text that constructs a particular image of the town and shapes the visitors’ experience. The paper adopts a historical-geographical perspective and employs content, structural, and interpretative analyses of the guide. Particular attention is paid to the interrelationship between historical memory, national representation, and tourism in interwar Martin. The findings suggest that the guide played a significant role in constructing the image of Turčiansky Svätý Martin as the centre of Slovak national life and served as an important instrument of the cultural representation of the site.
