Položka Effective emotion regulation as a protective factor of depression symptoms in Slovak adolescents during a COVID-19 pandemic(Polska Akademia Nauk : Warszawa, 2024) Pilárik, Ľubor; Mikoška, Petr; Helvich, Jakub; Melišíková, AlicaThe aim of our study was to verify relationships between individual difficulties in emotion regulation (ER), ER strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), and compassion (to self and others) with the presence of depressive symptomatology in a sample of Slovak adolescents during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the sample of 140 Slovak adolescents (age between 17–19 years) was administrated The Beck Depression Inventory-II. (Beck et al., 1996), The Overall Depression Severity and Impairment Scale (Bentley et al., 2014), The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Gross & John, 2003), The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (Gratz & Roemer, 2004), The Sussex-Oxford Compassion for the Self Scale and The Sussex-Oxford Compassion for Others Scale (Gu et al., 2019). Results revealed that difficulties in ER (all subscales) and expressive suppression were in positive relationships with depression symptoms. Cognitive reappraisal and self-compassion were in negative relationships with depression symptoms. Lack of ER strategies and cognitive reappraisal (inversely) were the strongest predictors of depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that ER strategies (mainly cognitive reappraisal) could be assumed as protective factors in adolescent depression symptoms development in stressful circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.Položka Self-concept and personality factors of Slovak adolescents as predictors of their school engagement(Wydawnictwo Adam Marszałek : Toruń, 2025) Ďuricová, LenkaThe aim of the study is to examine self-concept sensu Piers-Harris and personality traits sensu Big Five in the role of predictors of the construct of Slovak adolescents’ school engagement (N = 575, 15–20 years old, 52% women). Research tools: Student Engagement in School - Four Dimensional Scale/SES4DS, Adolescent Self-Concept Short Scale/ASCSS, The Mini International Item Pool/Mini IPIP. The resulting regression model explains 34% of the variability of adolescent school engagement by means of these variables (except neuroticism and extraversion), with adolescents’ self-concept sensu Piers-Harris confirmed as the strongest predictor. Since self-concept can be modified during adolescence, the result may be relevant to intervention programmes for underachieving students and students with poor school engagement.Položka The predictive influence of the big five personality traits on adolescent self-concept(inScience Press : Lisabon, 2024) Pašková, Lucia; Ďuricová, LenkaIn today's dynamic and changing environment, the adolescent's social environment and social inclusion are vital because of the formative influence of experiences with the social environment on the adolescent's self-concept. Self-concept is among the most important predictors of mental health and quality of life in contemporary adolescents. The underlying concept of the present paper is the Piers-Harris model of self-concept, which is viewed following the Big Five concept. The main aim of the present study is to analyse the predictive influence of the Big Five personality traits on adolescents' self-concept. The research population comprised 1 013 Slovak adolescents (73% female, AM age = 17.00, SD age = 1.27). The research instruments used were the ASCSS/Adolescents' Self-concept Short Scale (Veiga & Leite, 2016) and the Slovak version of the NEO FFI personality questionnaire (Ruisel & Halama, 2007). Correlational analysis showed several moderately significant relationships between the Big Five factors and individual dimensions and with adolescents' overall self-concept. Regression analysis subsequently demonstrated a clear predictive effect of personality on adolescent self-acceptance, demonstrating that personality traits are an important source of adolescents' self-definition. Mental health promotion also emphasises the promotion of a favourable self-concept in adolescents, which creates room for the influence of professionals in counselling or school psychology. The paper is part of the project VEGA 1/0765/21 Multidimensional self-concept of the digital adolescent generation in Slovakia and its contexts.
